The C5 Corvette was introduced into the showroom floors in 1997 with all sorts of changes from its earlier generations. The 1997 C5 Corvette was offered only as a coupe and heavily equipped yet more compact new LS1 350HP/345 lbs of torque 5.7 Liter motor. An Electronic Throttle Control system gave technicians a wider range of throttle progression.  This meant that the traditional throttle cable was eliminated there for when the gas pedal was pressed it was moving a senor that was tied into the engines management computer.   The LS1 motor in the 1997 C5 Corvette was designed to go 100,000 between major servicing!  As far as transmission the 1997 C5 Corvette was presented with a 4L60-E Electronic 4 speed overdrive automatic transmission as standard equipment and a 6 speed manual transmission as an option.
The length of the 1997 C5 Corvette increased only by an inch; however the wheelbase was increased 8” from 96.2" to 104.5". With all this stretching and pulling this equaled greater passenger area and made the cockpit roomier while reducing the overall weight of car by nearly 80lbs.

To assist in a more precise handling car there was a new chassis used that was more durable than that of the C4. The 1997 C5 Corvette chassis consisted of 2 full length, hydro formed perimeter frame rails.  The transaxle was mounted in the rear which freed up more room in the interior and also helped with a 50/50 weight distribution.  Over all the new C5 sat nearly 4 inches lower than the C4 and with improved aerodynamics the Corvette was truly refined.
The interior in the 1997 C5 Corvette was refreshing and included hints of past Corvettes dating back to the original 1953 Corvette. The interior went back to a dual pod design with a grab bar for the passenger, and overall more foot room. Leather seats came standard in all 1997 C5 Corvettes. The instrument panel included analog gauges and also there was a digital DIC (Driver Information Center) that had 12 individual readouts in 4 different languages.
